Antarctica is a contradiction of terms; it’s officially classified as a desert because so little rain falls each year. Yet its massive mantle of ice (which at its thickest reaches 5 km in depth) contains enough fresh water to raise sea levels somewhere around 50 or 60 meters. On the other hand, thanks to various international treaties preventing commercial exploitation (other than limited tourism), it remains as unspoiled as ever. Therefore, Antarctica is able to fulfil its role as a laboratory for tracking climactic change and seeking clues to the origins of the universe.
